Tanya Elmore transitioned from her earthly life to her heavenly home on February 16, 2022, surrounded by her loving daughters. Tanya was born on October 12, 1955, in Valhalla, NY. She is the daughter of Estelle Josephine Brickhouse and Jack Wesley Sutton.
Tanya strived to live life to the fullest. Determined to further her education she proudly graduated from both Mercy College and Fordham University while majoring in Social Work. After completion of her degrees she worked for a non profit organization that served both youth and adults. Tanya worked tirelessly to help her clients navigate life and provide them with resources to help their families solve some of the problems they faced. Tanya loved the field of Social Work but after some years transitioned into the position of Head Teacher caring for children. Being able to make an impact in the lives of others was important to Tanya whether through Social work or caring for children.
As a single parent, Tanya embraced the challenges and financial adversities of raising two children by herself. She worked hard to make sure her children had opportunities and a lifestyle she could be proud of. Although Tanya had many secular accomplishments by far her most cherished accomplishment was obtaining her Masters in Theology from Community Bible Institute. Her personal relationship with the Lord was top priority in her life. If you asked her what it meant to have a relationship with the Lord she would tell you it means to know Him and to be known by Him. She stressed the importance of studying God’s Word, fellowshipping with Him, and not just calling on Him in times of trouble. Tanya loved to evangelize and was a firm believer in the power of prayer. Tanya was an active member of Springfield Baptist Church and served in many different capacities.
Tanya’s love for Jesus was undeniable and after her love for the Lord there was the love she had for her family. Tanya loved her children unconditionally and unselfishly supported them through the various stages of their lives. Whether they needed a listening ear, words of wisdom, or just the love of their mom she was there to provide it. She made it her mission to teach them to have a personal relationship with the Lord and made sure to not only teach her daughters but her grandchildren as well. From bible study lessons to making learning the Word fun with bible trivia she wanted to instill the importance of salvation and a personal walk with the Lord. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. Her grandchildren affectionately called her Nan Nan. All who knew Tanya would get an earful of how much her family means to her and all the proud moments she shared while smiling enthusiastically.
In her free time, she enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family, spending time with her friends, celebrating special events and milestones with those closest to her, and one of her favorite pastimes dancing. Tanya’s vibrant smile and hearty laugh lit up every room she entered. The love in her radiated throughout her personality. She loved life and wanted to live it to its fullest. She strived to be a bright light in this world.
To say that her family and friends will miss her greatly is an understatement. Tanya is survived by her two loving daughters Sakeeya (Alvin) and Nakeeya both of NY. Her grandchildren Dakai, Nyrei, Jesiah, Richard, and Dezire. Her sisters Arlene of NC, Cheryl and Valerie both of NY. Her brothers Jesse, Darryl (Veronica), Rodney, Paul, and Jeffrey (Felicita). Along with a host of bonus children, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She also leaves to cherish her memory her special friends Joe (MD), Pam, Evelia, and Joan who the ladies affectionately called themselves the Golden Girls.
Tanya was preceded in death by her parents Estelle better known as Josephine and Jack Sutton. As well as her siblings Douglas, Charlene aka Mama, William, and Jack. A celebration of life will be held to honor the beautiful life Tanya lived.
