Obituary

Robert P. Galloway, a longtime Beacon resident, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at the Kaplan Hospice in Newburgh, NY; at the age of 89. He was born in Dumbarton, Scotland on July 3, 1933, son of the late Samuel & Alice (Stewart) Galloway. On May 25, 1968, he married Christine Livingstone back in their native land of Scotland; the two met at a bar in Queens, NY, and from there fell in love... Happily married for 51-years, until Christine predeceased him on July 21, 2019. He was a communicant of the St. Joachim-St. John the Evangelist Church in Beacon.

Prior to emigrating to the US, Robert served in the British Army as part of the Seaforth Highlanders, 1st Battalion serving Gibraltar.  Upon completing his tour in the Army, he returned to Scotland and began his five-year apprenticeship as a painter.  When he finished his apprenticeship, he began his career in painting as a ship painter.

In 1962, he made the move to come to the US and as the story goes, he began working immediately as a union painter.  Career wise he eventually went into business with his partner, David Sullivan, creating Old Firm Contracting.

After retiring, he and Christine became avid travelers adventuring around the globe. With this family being his first passion, the other was soccer.  Robert was proud to have been a founding member Beacon Soccer Club and has continuously been involved in soccer since coming to the US.  If there was soccer being played in Beacon, you were guaranteed to see him there.  He enjoyed his years of coaching in Beacon and at Dutchess Community College, after they asked for his help in revitalizing their program.  His favorite players ever called him Gramps and he found such joy in watching/coaching his grandsons and his great-grandchildren.  Along with his passions, he was very proud of his Scottish roots and was a member of the Dutchess County Scottish Society

Robert is survived by his daughter and son-in-law: Jacqueline and Dimas Arroyo of Beacon; His two grandsons, Robert (Caitlin) Arroyo and Dimas (Erena) Arroyo; and his five great-grandchildren, all whom he adored: Brayden, Alexander, Autumn, Brielle and McKenna Christine Arroyo. He is also survived by his four brothers Harry, Stewart, Samuel & Andrew Galloway; his brother-in-law James Larson; sister-in-law Jane Livingstone; numerous nieces and nephews, who he also adored and countless friends who became family.  A special thank you to the caregivers he had over the past few years,  Valrie, Marjorie, and Joe and Ashley Vargas.

Along with his wife Christine and his parents, Robert was predeceased by one brother Peter Galloway.

His Family will gather with Friends on Thursday, June 15 from 4-8 pm at the LIBBY FUNERAL HOME, 55 Teller Avenue, Beacon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 16, 10:00AM at St. Joachim Church, 51 Leonard Street, Beacon, followed by interment at St. Joachim Cemetery, 325 Washington Avenue, Beacon.
