Ronald Edwards

RONALD EDWARDS was born in Nyack on April 13, 1945 to Adele Eure and Curtis Edwards who both predeceased him. He is also predeceased by his Step Father Garfield Carter. His surviving siblings include: Curtis Edwards Jr., Marlene Theresa Harvey, Larry Edwards, Gary Carter, Kenneth Carter and his special cousin James T. Hamlet. His brother Tyrone Edwards predeceased him. Ronald is survived by his 3 children; Karla Riendeau, Ronald Edwards and RJ Trimble-Edwards. He was drafted during the Vietnam War and served in the United States Army overseas in Korea for 2 years. He was retired from the New York State Department of Correctional Services at Fishkill Correctional Facility where he served as a Correction Officer, Firearms and Chemical Agents Instructor and Defensive Tactics Instructor. Ron resided most of his life in Beacon, New York. In the early 1980’s Ron and his friend Ray Eurich became partners in R and R Racing, Cycle and Auto Performance, and built race bikes. Ron continued to build motorcycles until his recent illness prevented him from doing so. He also served as a President of Local 1255 and Vice President of Council 82, Security and Law Enforcement Union, AFSCME/AFL-CIO. He was an outstanding athlete and excelled throughout his life in Football, Basketball and Track and Field. He tried out for the New York Jets in 1969 with Joe Namath and John Dockery but his time was cut short by an injury. In 1995 he was inducted into the Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame. In 2009 he was inducted into the Rockland County Track and Field Hall of Fame. In 2015 he was inducted into the Nyack High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was All County (Rockland) in Football, Basketball and Track and Field. He was a New York State Champion in High Jump. He was the First Basketball Player to score 1,000 points in Rockland County and County High Scorer. In 1984 he won Gold Medals for High Jump at the International Police Olympics in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1986 he won Gold Medals for High Jump at the International Police Olympics in Columbus, Ohio. He won many motorcycle drag races at various drag strips around the country in the Super Comp class. He was known most affectionately by his drag racing friends as "Voo Doo", named after one of his drag bikes, "Voo Doo One". He was both Head Coach and Assistant Coach for many years, coaching his son RJ Trimble-Edwards in Pop Warner Football, CYO Basketball and Cal Ripkin Baseball and his teams won many championships. Ron's favorite hobbies included drag racing with his friends Raymond (Juice) Stewart and Joe Franco, and traveling around the country with his Brother Kenny Carter to watch his son RJ Trimble-Edwards play Division 1 College Football. ‘In light of the recent worldwide occurrences dealing with the outbreak of COVID-19, and in accordance with State Regulations (no-more than 10-people and social distancing applying); a private gathering of Immediate Family Only will occur then interment will following to the Veterans National Cemetery in Long Island, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for memorial donations to be made in Ronald’s memory to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
