Robert Travis

Robert F Travis, a lifelong resident of Beacon and Wappingers Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2019 at the Veterans Home in Montrose, NY. Bob was born on November 28, 1926, the son of the late Emma Dinges and Fredrick Travis. He was also predeceased in 1989 by his beloved wife, Dorothy Mohr, whom he was married for 36 years. Robert graduated from Beacon High School Class of 1944. At 17, he enlisted in the Navy. He was trained in Radar Naval Operations and served on the destroyer USS Tucson. He witnessed the signing of the peace treaty signifying the surrender of Japan and ending WWII from aboard his ship in the South Pacific. Following the war, Bob graduated from Simmons College in Syracuse, New York. He was a Senior Design Draftsman for Texaco Research Center for over 37 years and retired in May 1985. Bob actively contributed to the health and safety of the company's employees for over 30 years by teaching First Aid and serving as a CPR Instructor & Trainer for the Texaco Emergency Team. He was an active member of the Employees Association, the Bowling League and was elected as the Vice President of the Employee Association (BTEA). He was always interested in civic affairs and gave freely of his time and talents to many causes throughout his life. While living in Beacon, NY, he served on the Beacon Babe Ruth League formation committee, The Beacon School Advisory Committee, led the Beacon Recreation Committee which started the Ice Skating Program for local youth and he also worked with the local Police Department to establish a Bicycle Rodeo and Safety Program. He was President of the Forrestal PTA and Past Noble Grand of the IOOF. Bob was an avid leader and local visionary for the Boy Scout movement. He dedicated 60 years of his life to the Boy Scouts in various capacities. He was an active member of the Hudson Valley Council BSA and The West Central Florida Council BSA in Seminole, Florida. He was Post Advisor of the Explorer Post One which started in 1949. He was very proud of the fact that at one time during his post, he had seven scouts attain the Eagle Ranking - all at one time. He was a charter member of the Nooteeming Lodge #443 Order of The Arrow. In recognition of his contributions, Robert was the recipient of many awards and honors including The Silver Beaver Award, the Scouter's Key in Scouting and Exploring, The Award of Merit, The Scout Master's Award of Merit, and The God and Country Religious Award. Bob loved to travel and particularly enjoyed his time and travels with his motor home. He was an active member of the Holiday Rambler Recreational Club for many years. He was a past president of the Connecticut Yankees Chapter 55 Holiday Ramblers. He served as National Chairman of the Emergency Service First Aid Team at the International Holiday Ramblers Association. For many years, he wintered in Florida. While in Florida, he accumulated over 800 hours as a volunteer at the Sun Coast Hospital Emergency Room in Largo, Florida. Bob loved and was loved deeply by his family. He is survived by sister, Inez M. Brown of Beacon, NY. He is also survived by his son, Robert D. and his wife Terri of Tucson, Arizona and his daughter Dawn and her husband Kevin Fitzpatrick of Darien, CT. He is blessed with four grandchildren; Alyssa Shomroni (husband Jonathan) of Tel-Aviv, Israel, Christina Cleaver (husband Andrew) of Tucson, AZ, Travis Fitzpatrick (finance Brianna Blackwell) of San Diego, CA and Bobby Fitzpatrick (Hoboken, NJ). He also is survived by two great grandchildren; Prince and Jonathan Cleaver of Tucson, AZ. A Private Graveside Service for Robert will be held at the Fishkill Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Boy Scouts of America or The New Hackensack Reformed Church in his memory.
