Joseph S. Mordas

Joseph S. Mordas, 94, a longtime Beacon resident, passed away on December 9, 2020 at his home in Beacon. He was born on November 26, 1926 in Port Jervis, NY, son of the late Andrew and Anna (Krawiec) Mordas. He graduated from Beacon High School in June 1944. In October 1944 he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served during World War II until he was honorably discharged in November 1945. Joseph received his bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees from New York University. On June 7, 1952 he married Lillian Katherine Wolff at her family’s home in Beacon. Mrs. Mordas survivies him at home. Mr. Mordas was an educator for nearly 30 years. He was revered by his students at Beacon High School where he taught math, and later was a guidance counselor. He also coached boy’s basketball and cross-country with great success. He was inducted into the Beacon City School District Athletic Hall Of Fame in the year it was founded, 1998. He loved the game of tennis which he played regularly into his eighties with his beloved wife Lillian and their wonderful friends. He was an avid gardener and travelled the world extensively in his retirement with Lillian. In addition to his wife of 68 years, Joseph is survived by his two daughters: Deborah (James) Sheers and Lynn Mordas. He is also survived by three granchildren: Joanna (Marc) Seidenstein, Matthew (Laura) Sheers and Laura Mordas-Schenkein(Dan Hansen); and his three great-granchildren: Owen Sheers, Evelyn Seidenstein and Siena Sheers. He delighted in his family, as they did in him. A Celebration of His Life will be held privately at a later date at the convenience of his family.
