John ODell

O’Dell, John H. ‘Shifty’ of Beacon, entered into rest suddenly, Thursday, June 18, 2015, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Newburgh. He was 68. Born in Cold Spring, on October 6, 1946 he was the son of Walter Jr. and Violet Lounsbury O’Dell. John was a retired Supervisor from USMA DHPW Roads and Bridges after 36 years, and owned and operated O’Dell’s Landscaping since 1982. He was the last survivng founding member of Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps., A Lieutenant for the past 6 years with Dutchess Junction Fire Co., past member of Beacon VFW post #666, and former Chaplain, life member City of Newburgh VFW Post #973 where he served 12 consecutive years as Commander, a member of the American Legion #203, Beacon, as well as a member of BPO Elks #1493 Beacon. He Served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1968, and graduated from Army School of Engineering, prior to serving two years in Reserves. John married Barbara L. Basso, on October 8, 1967 at St. Joachim’s Church, Beacon. Survivors include his wife Barbara and son Patrick who survives him at home, his daughter Brandy Capolino (Dennis) of Beacon, brothers and sisters; Donna Lane of Cortland Manor, Robert O’Dell of Mahopac, Darlene O’Dell & Elizabeth O’Dell, two grandchildren, who were the light of his life, Abrionna & Nikolas, one step grandchild, Margherita, as well as several nieces, nephews, sisters & brothers in law. John touched the lives of countless people, whom will never forget him. Visitation will be held Monday, June 22, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Libby Funeral Home, Inc. 55 Teller Ave. Beacon, A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at 11:00 am at St. Joachim’s Church 51 Leonard St. Beacon, Interment with Military Honors will follow in Cold Spring Cemetery, Cold Spring, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. 14 Cedar St. Cold Spring, NY 10516. Arrangements are under the direction of Jarett D.
