Gerald Thorn

June 16, 1931 — October 20, 2013

Gerald Robert Thorn, 82, a life long Beacon resident, passed away suddenly, but peacefully, at home on October 20, 2013. He was the son of Charles and Leola (Way) Thorn. Gerry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marianne P. (Wiegard) Thorn and their children, Dawn (Cuchelo) Ainsworth; Linda (Cuchelo) Groza; Heidi J. Thorn and her spouse, Bitsy Castillo; and Charles Thorn and his wife, Kristine (Della Gatto) Thorn. He was deeply loved by his eight grandchildren Alex Burns, Jesse Burns, Michael Groza, Gene Castillo, Mark Castillo, Aidan Thorn, Nicholas Thorn, and Caitlin Thorn and great-granddaughter Xylie Burns. He is survived by his sister Judy (Thorn) Antalek and her husband Jerry Antalek, whose morning coffee conversations gave him something to look forward to every day, along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Glen Thorn and his wife Ruth. Gerry served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War and was a life member of Beacon Engine Fire Company. He retired from the N.Y. State Department of Corrections after 27 years at Fishkill Correctional Facility. He continued working many more years until full retirement when his days were filled with wood working, feeding the wild life in his backyard, and most importantly, greeting and treating all the neighborhood dogs on his front porch. In honor of his wishes, there will be no formal services. However, there will be a gathering in celebration of Gerry's life on Thursday, October 24th from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus on Townsend Avenue in Beacon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dutchess County SPCA (www.dcspca.org) or to Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps (www.beaconvac.org).
