Ernest M. Graves

July 26, 1929 — February 12, 2021

Ernest M. Graves, 91, a resident of Newburgh, passed away peacefully with his children by his side. He was born on July 26, 1929 in Youngstown, OH, son of the late Mark & Mary (Bullock) Graves. He attended Youngstown University and was a member of the Beta PI Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Ernest proudly served in the United States Navy from 1947 to 1951, and received an honorable discharge for his service. Ernest worked as a Correction Officer for 14-years(1962-1976), starting at Green Haven Correctional Facility in Stormville, then transferred to Matteawan Correctional in Beacon which later became Fishkill Correctional, where he later retired. Ernest enjoyed life and the simple things it brought. He loved reading, and the knowledge it brought him. He also loved music, and listening to the likes of Billy Eckstine, Diana Ross and many more. Most especial-ly he enjoyed the time spent with his family, his children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren. They will hold dear the words he would speak to them and lived his life by: "If I can help someone as I go through Life then my living shall not have been in vain." The exemplary life he led is reflected in the impact he had on others. No one was overlooked or neglected by his kind and encouraging words. Never seeking recognition, simply recognized for his generosity and compassion and empathy. A humble man of integrity who compelled you to want to do your best and to be your best. Everyone he met has a memory that can be attributed to his ability to be above reproach yet approachable. Always considerate of others espousing a selflessness that benefited everyone he encountered. From a simple tip of his hat, a nod or wave of hello, a gentleman in every sense of the word. Admired by many embodying the character of a man whose bridge was never too far to cross. Ernest is survived by his 3 children: Timothy Williamson, Leslie ‘Paula' (George) McKenzie and Michael ‘Vance' Graves; his children's mother whom was his dear good-friend, Martha Williamson. He is also survived by his 3 grandchildren: Diamond (Marlon) George, Avanté Graves and Zamere McKenzie; his 2 great-grandchildren: Dream George and Marlow George; his 4 special cousins Joyce, Gina, Keith, Ann, and several nieces & nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Daniel Bullock. His Family will gather privately to remember his life and service at a later date.
