Elbert Sweat, Sr.

Poughkeepsie, NY; formerly of Beacon

Elbert Sweat Sr., was born on December 16, 1933 in Millen, GA, son of the late John Willie and Susie Mae (Oglesby) Sweat; and on September 30, 2021, The Lord called him home; he was 87 years old.

Elbert was educated in the Georgia School System briefly and left to work as a Sharecropper Farmer at Standard Clayton Farms in Millen, Georgia.

On December 17, 1955, Elbert married the love of his life, Mamie Lou Ward (Sweat). To this union six children were born.

In March of 1969 Elbert and his family migrated from West Palm Beach, Florida to Beacon, New York.

Elbert worked at American Lumber CO in Chelsea, New York as a lumber handler. In 1974 he was injured working on the job and became disabled.

Elbert Sweat loved the Lord. It was the Holy Spirit that taught him how to read the Bible. Elbert Sweat was a faithful servant of the Lord. He attended Faith Assembly of God Church in Newburgh, NY until he was afflicted by various illnesses and then became a resident of Fishkill Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing.

Along with his parents, Elbert was predeceased by his daughter Frances Sweat; brothers, John (Buddy), Willie Jackson, Arthur Sweat; his sisters, Rosa Mae Sweat Moore, Corene Sweat-Sea, Bennie Mae Sweat, Shirley Ann Sweat Walthour and Ruby Sweat Davis.

Elbert leaves to cherish his memories; his lovely wife of 65 years, Mamie Lou Sweat of Poughkeepsie, N.Y; His children, Elbert Sweat Jr. of Beacon, NY, Jackie Sweat, Herbert Sweat, of Poughkeepsie, NY, Betty Ann Sweat of Fishkill, NY, and Alvin (Pearlie) Sweat of Arlington, NY; His brothers, Thomas (Loretta) Sweat of Beacon, NY, John Sweat of Georgia; his sister Mary Lou Sweat Reynolds of Georgia and adopted daughter Debbie (Iggy) Tirado of Newburgh, NY; His grandchildren whom he helped raise, Romaine Sweat, Jerod Sweat, Toshun Sweat, Joseph Sweat, Ricky Sweat-McVay; A total of 20 grandchildren and several nieces & nephews.

Elbert was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many.

His Family & Friends will gather on Saturday, October 9th from 11:00am to 12:00 noon at the LIBBY FUNERAL HOME, 55 Teller Avenue, Beacon, where a home-going service will be offered at 12:00 Noon followed by a final procession and a private cremation.
