Shea, Barbara M. of Beacon, entered into rest Saturday, June 4, 2016 at her home. She was 76. Born November 8, 1939 in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Frank Surko and Elsie Kochay, she was the widow of the late Richard (Dick) T. Shea who predeceased her December 25, 2001. Barbara was the President and Founder of Animal Rescue Foundation, Beacon, NY. In 1986 Barbara’s husband photographed some abandoned cats and kittens at a local Animal Hospital in hopes of finding homes for the cats, he suggested that Barbara start a shelter, the City Government donated property on Simmons Lane, and with a small amount of pledged money, ARF was born. Barbara left a legacy born of need and nurtured by love and dedication she is sadly missed by her family and many friends and shelter volunteers. Barbara was an avid collector of American Brilliant Period Cut Glass and a lifetime member of the American Cut Glass Association. Survivors include; two nieces Tammy Surko Bellman of CA., and Susan Surko of West VA. She was predeceased by her brother Thomas Surko. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 8, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Libby Funeral Home, Inc. 55 Teller Ave. Beacon, NY where at 7:00 PM services will take place.
